Our Story
One team.
80+ years of experience
in digital health.
Too often, the most important data — the kind that can change treatment, inform policy, and save lives — is the hardest to work with. We built Syno to change that.
Our team has spent 80+ combined years in digital health — at mySugr, Roche, Glooko, Diasend, Tidepool, hi.health, Sava, Diabeloop and more. We've led international teams, built clinical systems, shaped US Medicare coverage policy, and co-founded companies. We know what it takes to make technology work in healthcare — not in theory, but from doing it.
Along the way, we also built Diabetes Cockpit — a free app where people with diabetes can see all their health data in one place. Its voluntary data donation feature saw 30-40% opt-in rates, accumulating 1.7 million patient-days of research-consented data. That dataset, combined with our platform, is now in production at leading research institutions across Europe, the UK, the US, and Canada.
Every person on our team lives with Type 1 Diabetes.
We're not observers in this space. We are patients, advocates, and engineers who got tired of waiting for better tools. We built Syno because we needed it ourselves — and because 589 million people living with diabetes deserve research that moves faster.
The team
Lukas Schuster
CEO & Founder
Diagnosed with T1D at 14. Spent a decade at mySugr/Roche leading a 20-person global evidence team, then built Diabetes Cockpit and founded Syntactiq to finish what he started.
Fredrik Debong
Compliance
Co-founded mySugr because he believed people with diabetes deserved better tools — then watched Roche acquire it. Now brings that same conviction to data privacy, compliance, and partnerships at Syntactiq.
Marc Grüner
Engineering
Built clinical systems at a pediatric diabetes hospital in St. Gallen. Now leads platform development at Syntactiq — building the tools he wished existed when he was on the other side of the system.
Richard Laurits
BD Advisor
15 years turning diabetes data into something useful — as GM of Diasend, VP of Glooko Europe, and now as BD advisor helping Syntactiq reach the teams that need it most.
Zoe Heineman
Commercial
Changed US Medicare coverage policy for insulin infusion systems. Initiated state laws mandating insurance coverage for diabetes. Johns Hopkins. Knows that better policy starts with better evidence.
Theresa Hastings
Community & Engagement
11 years building communities around the things that matter. Advises on community and engagement strategy for Syno and Diabetes Cockpit — because the best tools are built with the people who use them.
Syno
Data Science
The newest member of the team, with over a year of experience turning complex research questions into reproducible results. Loves AI. Still working on the diabetes part.
1.7 million patient-days. Growing every day.
Our Diabetes Cockpit app lets people with diabetes see all their health data in one place. Its voluntary data donation feature sees 30-40% opt-in rates — 10x the industry average. The result: a proprietary, research-consented dataset that goes deeper than any other — glucose, insulin, sleep, heart rate, activity, stress, menstruation, and more.

Free dataset access for academic research.
We believe faster science means better lives. That's why we offer universities full access to our dataset for their first research project — at no cost. It's our way of pushing diabetes research forward.

Data ethics first.
People's health data should serve them, not be extracted from them.
Relentlessly practical.
We build for real workflows, real constraints, and real deadlines — not theoretical use cases.
Built by patients, for patients.
Every team member lives with the condition we're building for.
